The Institute for Migration Research

The Institute for Migration Research was founded in 1984 with a mission to scientifically investigate and understand all dimensions of migration, from external and internal population movements to the lives of the Croatian diaspora and minority communities. It is the only institution in Croatia that systematically and continuously monitors the full picture of migration and mobility through an interdisciplinary approach, encompassing national and ethnic minorities and various aspects of ethnic issues.
The Institute's interests extend beyond migration in the narrow sense. It explores Croatian identity and the lives of populations on the islands, along the coast, and in continental regions, with particular attention given to comparative research into post-migration phenomena which remains in the lives of people and communities long after the move has taken place.
This broad research focus is what positions the Institute among its European and global counterparts and opens it up to collaboration with all partners whose primary activity is the study of migration, ethnicity, identity, and mobility.
In its work, the Institute conducts interdisciplinary research, deductive, inductive, and abductive alongside science outreach, lectures, conference organisation, consultations, and related activities. The Institute actively contributes to the accumulation of knowledge about the sociopolitical conditions and consequences of migration, ethnic development, and the various forms of identity that shape society.
