Institute of Archeology

The Institute of Archaeology is a public scientific institute focused on research in the field of archaeology in the Republic of Croatia.
The mission of the institute is to conduct basic and applied scientific research in the field of humanities, archaeology, with a strong interdisciplinary emphasis, in accordance with the principles of open science and in cooperation with national and international stakeholders, the economy, education and cultural sectors. The Institute conducts and expands its scientific activities by developing methodologies, conducting research and disseminating results, through which it valorises archaeological heritage at all levels.
Recognizing the possibilities of digital technologies, but also the need for permanent storage of research data and its social role, the Institute is dedicated to increasing its visibility to the public. Inheriting the principles of the FAIR initiative, national and EU strategic guidelines, a strong step forward in the form of openness of the institution towards all social stakeholders was made. Thus, over the past period, the Institute has launched a series of activities aimed at the digitization of archaeological data, primarily the Digital Repository of Archaeological Documentation and Research Data of the Institute of Archaeology (DIARH), which collects, permanently preserves and makes available the rich archaeological material collected by the Institute's field research, and The database of antique archaeological sites of the Republic of Croatia, which was created by structuring data collected during Institute’s fieldwork and through literary sources. Digitization, digital processing and public availability of research data are carried out through a series of research projects. The Institute is the publisher of two journals (Proceedings of the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb and Annals of the Institute of Archaeology) which are also published online in open access (CC BY 4.0).
