The Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography is the Croatian central lexicographic institution. It was established on October 5, 1950 following the incentive of the writer and erudite Miroslav Krleža. Since then, all through to the present, the editions of the Institute of Lexicography are an important contribution to the maintenance and development of the Croatian cultural standard. Encyclopaedias, atlases, dictionaries, lexicons and bibliographies of the Institute of Lexicography are traditionally reliable and explain in a distinguishing manner facts relating to the Croatian heritage and social reality.
Since 2009, the Institute has been developing a publicly accessible digital repository of lexicographical and scientific content:
- The Online Edition of the Croatian Encyclopedia (http://enciklopedija.hr/), a general encyclopedia with a national component, contains more than 71,000 continuously updated and expanded articles.
- The Croatian Biographical Lexicon is a national biographical lexicon published in nine volumes. Eight volumes (A-Li), comprising over 11,000 articles, have been digitized (https://hbl.lzmk.hr/), and the online edition includes biographies of more than 260 prominent individuals.
- The Croatian Technical Encyclopedia was conceived as a parallel print and online edition, making it a pioneer in the region. It currently contains over 2,200 articles available on the Croatian Technical Heritage Portal (https://tehnika.lzmk.hr/).
- The Knowledge Portal (http://enciklopedija.lzmk.hr/) is a collection of published book materials comprising 11 digitized editions with approximately 160,000 articles. The online editions of the Croatian Encyclopedia, Croatian Biographical Lexicon, and Croatian Technical Encyclopedia are also searchable through the Knowledge Portal.
- The Collection of Encyclopedic Heritage (https://e-bastina.lzmk.hr/), available since 2023, includes 12 digitized editions published between 1954 and 1996, containing approximately 100,000 articles.
- The Encyclopedic Monograph Croatia: Land and People (http://www.croatia.eu/) has been published in six languages in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, while the digital edition of the Lexicon of Marin Držić (http://leksikon.muzej-marindrzic.eu/) was created in collaboration with the Marin Držić House in Dubrovnik.
- Croatian Exonyms focus on the linguistic standardization of foreign geographic names. The printed editions are available online at https://egzonimi.lzmk.hr/.
- The Interactive Digital Edition Flags and Coats of Arms (https://zastave.lzmk.hr/) provides an up-to-date overview of the flags and coats of arms of all countries, accompanied by texts, games, and quizzes.
